Preserving soil
Agricultural land near the metro in the north-east of Vienna is to be developed into a new neighbourhood in the long term.
The aim of our project is to preserve this valuable soil as much as possible and use it for organic, biodiverse vegetable cultivation – instead of existing monocultures.
Housing therefore frames south-facing vegetable gardens, which are professionally managed by local businesses as community-supported agriculture – and which allow residents to help out and participate in the production of their vegetables.
Timber buildings form pairs: One has a semi-basement for processing and storing vegetables and tools. The other has a ground floor with extra height for communal spaces, local amenities, workplaces, kindergartens and nurseries. Solar green roofs serve as biotopes and compensate for land use.
Mobility hubs make the neighbourhood car-free, avoid underground parking and serve as logistics hub and market for the harvest.
