Zukunft Bestand in Regionen

Zukunft Bestand in Regionen is a project commissioned by the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund to promote the ecological renovation of detached houses (including single-family homes) in rural regions by directly addressing homeowners.

In this project, a specific case study demonstrates that an ecological renovation can meet new-construction standards – heating demand would be reduced by over 80%, and CO₂ emissions by over 90%. Comparative life-cycle analyses for conventional renovation as well as for demolition and new construction also show that ecological renovation would result in the lowest CO₂ emissions and highlight the concrete scope for action available to homeowners.

The project presents specific measures for comprehensively improving houses, gardens, and mobility and demonstrates their application in three prototypical scenarios – small, medium, and large – in which the case study is transformed into a home for a single family, for multiple generations, and for multiple families. This highlights alternatives to the common practice of demolition and new construction.

Zukunft Bestand in Regionen was published as a brochure in collaboration with the Urfahr West Climate and Energy Model Region (KEM) and is available online and in print.
