Kindergarten Hügelhof

For a municipality in Salzburg, a building with a kindergarten and communal flats is to be built on a site at the village square and at the foot of a hill.

Our project pursues three objectives: 1) integrate the town, 2) integrate the hill, 3) provide optimal natural lighting.

The building therefore has a clear address to the village square, completes the formation of the square and supports the creation of a meeting point in the village. The kindergarten frames the view from the village square to the hill and integrates the foothills of the hill into a courtyard for play. The group rooms are orientated to the east and south-east, flooded with light in the mornings and lit from both sides.

The building offers clarity: efficient, three-storey structures provide group rooms and flats; a central structure houses kitchen and staff rooms.

The untreated timber façade makes the prefabricated timber construction visible, greying naturally and giving the building a characteristic and local appearance.
